Some of the earlier comments by white people seemed to be coming from a long standing racist stereotype.

The identity piece here is really important.

A lot of conversations about the safety net miss that people are not only reacting to policy, they are reacting to what accepting help seems to say about them. If “working class” has been emotionally tied to self-sufficiency, then support can feel like a threat to dignity even when it would materially improve someone’s life.
